Jim Dostal is suspected of committing suicide by close friends and coworkers. The football coach died at the age of 59. In 2003, Jim Dostal, a well-known public figure in Cedar Rapids, was inducted into the Coe College Hall of Fame.
He was an all-metro and all-conference running back at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. He later coached at Coe, Prairie, and Jefferson after playing collegiate football. Dostal led the J-Hawks to a Class 4A State Playoff semi-final appearance in 1992. The football coach received his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Iowa in 2012. Residents in Cedar Rapids have confirmed the cause of his death, albeit no official notification has been made.

Jim Dostal, the veteran Cedar Rapids football coach, died in Cedar Rapids at the age of 59. The official cause of his death has yet to be revealed. However, according to social media, the football coach committed suicide. According to the Gazette, a man was discovered dead near Taft Middle School on Wednesday morning.
First responders were called to the middle school at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday for a report of an unresponsive adult man. Medical personnel pronounced the man dead. Taft Principal Gary Hatfield sent an email to parents stating that no Taft students or staff were engaged in the medical incident.
The entire email was later shared on the Cedar Rapids community subreddit. The email stated that because the community is tiny, someone at the school knew the man and that the news would affect others. In the comments area, many individuals confirmed that the man was former football coach Jim Dostal.
Several commenters in the comments area, however, rightfully questioned the source. According to one user, they told teachers at Prairie and Jefferson about the tragedy after school. According to another user, sources close to the situation (Jefferson, Prairie, and Taft) confirmed the death was a suicide.
Football Coach Tributes Flood In
Flood is remembered by football coach Jim’s death was announced on X by Mark Bliss, a longtime friend and former head coach of Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. “Today I share the news of the passing of my closest friend Jim Dostal,” he stated, holding up a photo of Jim.
I know that 1000 athletes and students benefited from having you in their lives. “I love and miss you, brother.” The two became good friends after meeting during a bowling tournament in Australia, according to The Gazette. Mark also told The Gazette that he came to Cedar Rapids after Jim convinced him to take the job. On Jim’s Facebook page, one of his students also posted a sweet comment for the coach.
Jim directed the graduation rehearsal, according to Saif Alsafi, class of 2010, Jefferson High School. The Jefferson Football X page also responded. “Today we were shocked by the passing of Dr./Coach Jim Dostal,” they went on to say. As a former student/athlete/grad, wonderful educator, and fantastic coach, Coach was a mainstay in our Westside community! His death strikes a raw nerve in the community. Coach, may you rest in peace.”
